Kingdoms of Kalamar questions

Lord Ben

First Post
I'm reading through Kalamar and I have a few questions.

What are Gibberlings and Bullywugs? These monsters are mentioned a lot in Kalamar, but they aren't in the Monster manual. I remember fighting Gibberlings in Baldurs Gate, but I never played AD&D except for 1hr of Baldurs Gate which I found boring. There was another one that was mentioned that wasn't in the MM too, but I don't remember which.

Will they ever make a list of the dieties favorite weapons? I know they have a list for domains on their website, but those will probably change too because for the players guide they said there will be new domains. Hopefully they'll have favorite weapons too.

Is there any stats for some of the magic items mentioned in the book? Like the Sword of Kings said it used to be a Paladin who turned into a Sword to serve his king for eternity. It also says it disappeared. Some things like the Kargi Mourn (sp?) have stats, but most don't. I can probably make something up, but I was just curious.

That's what I love about it

Regarding the creatures, I've been wondering what those are as well.

I believe the dieties favored weapons will be in the PHB coming out in April or so. I imagine they will also reprint the domains in there too (I hope).

The lack of stats for items and NPC's is one of the things I love about Kalamar. You are free to do whatever you want, and no one can even begin to second guess your choices (they shouldn't anyway...), since there is nothing to compare them to.

You could have the Sword of Kings be an item that your entire campaign hangs on, having world changing ramifications. Or it could be that the spirit of the paladin has been preverted over the years, turning it into a cruel instrument of evil, but one that has the possibility of redemption. Or it could just be a +2 weapon that disappeared because the legend was greater than it's power.

Oh yeah... unless there is extreme pressure on Kenzer or something, I doubt that they will provide stats for anything not already shown in the book. Frankly I prefer it that way.

Gibberlings and Bullywugs are in Monsters of Faerun.

[Edit]: I'll also second clvrmonkey re: stats. Such things are best left to the individual DM to determine.

Sword of Kings

Any ideas on what the sword of kings should be? I wanted to make it an item that increased as the wielder increased. Sort of like the Paladin is slowly giving powers to the new king. I wanted one of my PC's to be the secret heir of the king that was murdered (forgot the dynasty) and I wanted him to wield the sword for now, and the crown for later.

The crown I'm going to make give a bonus to charisma and leadership, and I had an idea for the 3rd missing item.

The sword I wanted to have start as a masterwork bastard sword, and slowly work up from there as the new king (he dosne't know it) gains power slowly. Eventually it would be fairly powerful, but I don't have any ideas on how to ramp it up. A enhancement bonus ever few levels? Do I give it abilities like holy, or special things like smite evil, aura of courage, etc like a Paladin has? Maybe protection from evil 1/day? Anyone have any suggestions?

I wasn't aware I needed to buy Monsters of Faerun to play Kalamar, will these monsters be detailed in any other book?

Kalamar Monsters

Hey,

As far as the Bullywug and Gibberling are concerned, if you don't have or don't want to purchase the Monsters of Faerun, you can ignore these monsters or substitute some other monster of you choosing. There are currently plans for a Kalamar creature book, though what it will contain has not been decided, nor has a release date been estimated.

As for the sword of kings, your ideas sound good. We purposely chose not to give many important NPCs and items stats because we wanted the DM to customize them for his own use.

Kenzer will publish the Kalamar players guide in April which will have all kinds of info in it. clvrmonkey states that this book will have the deities favoured weapons (it will) and hopes that they will reprint the domains, they won't. Instead they have an all new list that has new domains specific to kalamar.

Bullywugs started out as a Greyhawk specific creature way back when and somehow ended up in Monsters of Faerun.

Gibberlings I couldn't say.

Monsters of Faerun, given it's content; should have been called 'Monster Manual Addendum' or something.

Most of the stuff in Kalamar has no stats because the book is a campaign sourcebook and not a rulebook. :D

They leave anything major and 'artifact like' out of the rules and in the realm of something for a DM to use as a plot device.

If you actually included stats for some of those things it would kind of ruin their sense of wonder.

Especially when you finally managed to get it into the game and the player on the left suddenly bursts out "I know this, our spells are useless now but if you toss Elf pudding on him he's done for."

MoF

What is Elf Pudding? I've seen reference to it in several places and I didn't know if I'm missing some large inside joke or what. It was in the Sunless Citadel too.

Dracolich was the other monster I was missing, I don't mind not having specific stats for someone, but not monsters. Oh well, I can borrow MoF from a buddy.

Another Kalamar Kwestion: How does alignment work in this world. It dosen't specify alignment much when talking about the world which is fine with me, but how do you handle paladins working for the gov't? Lets say a Paladin of the Knight of the Gods is hired along with his warband (the other PC's) to intercept a Kalamarian caravan and destroy it. You get to your perfect spot only to find the Caravan led by a Paladin of the Old Man. Is good allowed to fight good or does good/evil trump politics? Or is that another muddy deal that's up to me to decide? Grr.... Good/Evil works well in Greyhawk where most nations who are good are aligned with other good nations and at war with bad nations, but in Kalamar when Politics is much more important in a world view then religion it gets muddy.

The rules for Kalamar are simple. They are exactly like what you see in the players handbook, dungeon masters guide, and monster manual. Save your DM decides to the change them.

So see the section in the PHB on alignment. :D
