King's Bounty: The Legend

I just picked it up at a friend's suggestion. It's not bad, however it does blatantly rip off HoMM something fierce. I don't know if it's because most of the HoMM team moved on to make this (hopefully the case) or because it's simply trying to be a ripoff (hopefully not the case). Anyone know?

One nitpick; the text is pretty poorly spell-checked.

Combat is very much like HoMM2. Creatures have selectable abilities, which is cool and adds a bit of tactics to enemies. I also like the Leadership score, which basically caps the number of creatures you can have in a stack... no more huge stacks of single monsters.

Hero control uses the pretty standard skill tree to select abilities. Might is basically combat, Magic is... well, magic, and Mind is (mostly) all the non-combat stuff. It works, even if it's fairly rote by now.

More thoughts later, gotta go to a meeting.

AFAIK, the developer of the game is from Russia, called Katauri Interactive.

If it is a [illegal] ripoff, then some legal actions should have been taken since the game have already been on the market for some time. Even before it was released, it was showcased in E3 earlier this year.

Are they going to wait until they actually make money before they sue? Pretty sneaky.

Actually, you guys are getting this backwards. The original King's Bounty came before the entire HoMM series. In fact, HoMM series was inspired by King's Bounty, which is not a huge surprise, considering that the two franchises were developed by the same person! The license for King's Bounty (which is now a very old game - and I must admit that I have never actually played it, but I am a fan of the HoMM series) was bought by a Russian company and they now created King's Bounty: The Legend.

In short, it is perfectly legal and the King's Bounty plus Heroes of Might and Magic are certainly related series (but King's Bounty came first), with HoMM being more strategy oriented, and King's Bounty being a Strategy/RPG hybrid.

In any case, I have just purchased the full version at Gamestop and am about to install it soon. :)

I think I remembered playing an IBM-compatible software that had "King" in the title which looked like a Pitfall clone (PC mostly walks from left to right). But that was back in '86 or '87.

I figured something like this might be the case, as they were very similar. I did not know that KB was an older game though.

For some reason, my copy of HoMM1 that I got in college wouldn't work until I played the copy of King's Bounty that came with it.

I don't remember much of it, other than that I was having serious money issues at the end, and only got better once the swarm of peasants on one of the last bosses took care of my dragons. Which really just seemed wrong.

I am playing the full version of the game now and I love it! The one thing that is truly less than perfect is the translation from Russian to English. The weird translation does not bother me so much, however, and in some respects it even adds a certain charm to the game that knows not to take itself too seriously.
