Ok, Im creating a magic crown (as an artifact) for a high king. What abilities should it have? Ive got a few ideas, but wanted some suggestions for stuff I might have missed.

I'm sort of surprised no one's responded to this yet. Sorry ArrisBoch.

Anyway, I think there are a couple of routes you could go. It could be some kind of divination item, allowing the wearer to Know Alignment or Detect Thoughts at will perhaps. Or it could be a buffing item, raising one or two attributes (definitely Wisdom, and also maybe Charisma) ensuring that he or she who wears the crown will rule justly and wisely, regardless of who they were before their royal ascension. Perhaps the kingdom is especially pious towards a given pantheon or god (divine right of kings?) and the crown allows them to commune with their god or gods. Or a favorite of mine: the crown absorbs a bit of the memory, skills, and personality of the kings who have worn it before, providing skill bonuses, possible Int. buff, sage knowledge, etc. Or depending on how artifacty you want to go, any or all of the above.

(Artifacty? Artifacty? Curse you Buffy!)

Items I would have on the following powers.

Crown of the High King

True Sight - Letsout him know when a demon makes an audience
Neutralize Poison (automatically expends a charge when wearer is poisoned)
Stoneskin - Simple Protection
Arcane Sight - Know who you are talking to.
Mind Bar - Keep the Kings mind free of influence.
Misdirection - Keeps the king safe by leaving unknowns around him.

Protection. From. Evil.

Its not an artifact level power, that's for sure, but c'mon. The first order of business is making sure that the King is not under anyone else's mind control. Being able to face down demons without them attacking him is cool too of course.

If you're going for Artifact level stuff, I like the idea of absorbing the memories of every former king. This would translate into skill bonuses, and a freakin' high Knowledge(History) score.

They say the best leaders know who to delegate to. Something in the Divination category to know the heart and abilities of person, and know that this person would make an excellent general, and this one a Minister of Law.

A less benign artifact might be able to cast Geas, or bind people magically to loyal service.

Some sort of not necessarily strong but very widespread bonus. Pretty much country-wide.

I'm thinking of the Hero's Crown in the book The Hero and the Crown. Since it was lost, the country (Damar) has been slowly sliding downwards; dissention among the nobles became more common, and so on.

When the heroine finally gets the crown back to the heir to the throne in the climactic battle, it turns the tide of the whole battle and lets the beleagured Damarians win.

Something from my website...

In the time of the god-like Ancestors, many powerful items of arcane power were created._ Some were created to aid the races of the Broadlands, others as weapons of power._ One such item created was made for the race of humans._ It was intended to help a great leader rule his land, and to keep order and peace throughout it._ Known as the Crown of Kings, it was handed down from monarch to monarch and was successfully used on many occasions._ It now rests in the hands of the current human king, Arrenes II, who proudly wears it upon his head.

The Crown of Kings can only be used by a human (or someone with human blood, such as a half-elf or half-orc)._ They must be of royal blood._ The Crown gives the wearer a +6 circumstance bonus to Charisma, and allows him to cast charm person three times per day and mass charm once per day._
