Knights Hospitallers (a possible model for paladins?)

G'day

I have put some material up on the 'Web that describes a slightly idealised version of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem (and, in less detail, the other Holy Fighting Orders) as it stood at June 1291. This was originally intended for a Chivalry & Sorcery campaign, but the material is not game-specific, and I suppose that it might be interesting to D&D players who are looking for a bit of grist for the ideas mill.

Swords of St John

Let me know if you find it interesting.

Great stuff here. I once ran a campaign in which all the PCs were agents of the Church and was pretty uch based on the various Orders of Holy Knights (Knights of the Temple being a general term for all Fighters within the Order)

IMHO a Paladin ought to be a member of an Order of the type described (but it should not be limited to Paladins alone) IMC All Paladins started as Knights-Crusaders and did not gain the status of Paladin until reaching higher levels (and Divine Grace)

Also have a look at Asgard Magazine # 5 and its discussion of Fighting Schools

The Concept could easily be extended to cover Holy Orders and the Feats, Skills (eg +2 Healing Skill) and Special Qualities (eg Free Lodging at Church Hostels) and Obligations (eg Charity, Service to the Sick) that membership affords
