Knockdown

First Post
Morning all,

Something came up in last weeks game and I would like some more input into it.

A monk with improved trip and the knockdown feat. This feat allows a free trip anytime you do 10 points or more of damage, as a free action.

As DM I ruled that if the free trip missed, the monks opponant would not get to attempt a trip back. My reasoning being that it was a free action for the monk, and his opponant could not respond.

Thoughts to this ruling, did I miss some rule? is my logic faulty?

FYI - Knockdown and Improved Trip to not interact. If you do the 10 pts of damage required to trigger a trip attempt, and succeed - you do not get the Improved Trip follow-up attack.

Normally, neither 3.0 Improved Trip, or Knockdown preclude an opponent from making a 'response' trip on a failed attempt. Personally, I'd say that Knockdown at the least, should disallow the response trip - you're not leveraging them or anything.. you just hit 'em really hard such that they stagger and fall. Not so much because of how fast it's happening, but because you're not -doing- anything special other than just whappin 'em.

First of all, just to let you know, Knockdown and Improved Trip don't work together. You can't make an attack, use Knockdown to trip the opponent, and then use Improved Trip to perform an extra attack.

Knockdown is a special attack that uses the Trip mechanic. It is not a TRUE trip attack. It is in the FAQ I believe that when using the Knockdown feat, your opponents do NOT get a chance to trip you if you fail. So yes, you were right on this.

What FAQ are you refering to? maybe there is other information I could use in it.

I am a little confused as to why they will not work together. As far as I remember from the feat descriptions there was nothing that led me to belive they would not. Please point me in the right direction.

Thanks

I believe it is in the main FAQ, and it is a case of the FAQ making up new rules. This is more balanced, but that is not really a part of the original feat.

The reasoning was that Improved Trip works with a trip attack... e.g. that levering and all the stuff you mentioned above. If you simply bash at someone so hard that he falls, you're not close enough or whatever to use the special combat technique for tripping that allows your follow up attack.
