Knowledge Redesigned

Darren Ravenshaw

First Post
Knowledge: When first selected character picks 1 primary field of study and has ranks and bonuses in that field as normal. The character then selects a umber of secondary fields equal to her Intelligence modifier. The character is onsidered to be trained in those fields with ranks and bonuses equal to half those of her primary field(round down).

For 2 skill points a character can either add a new secondary field, or they an improve a skill from secondary to pimary(gaining full ranks and bonuses).

Characters only get the synergy bonus from a field of knowledge if it is a primary field. For prestige classes that require a Knowledge skill of X ranks, the character qualifies only if that Knowledge skill is a primary one.

Example a 1st level druid with a 12(+1) Intelligence selects Knowledg(Nature) as her primary field of knowledge. She then selects Knowledge(Geography) as her secondary field of knowledge. She spends 4 skills points in Knowledge(Nature) giving her 4 Ranks with a +1 bonus from Intelligence. She also takes Skill Focus(Knowledge) as a feat. On any Knowledge(Nature) skill checks she has a +8 bonus to her roll, and a +3 bonus(2 ranks a +0 bonus from Intelligence, and a +1 bonus from Skill Focus) to any Knowledge(Geography), checks. At 2nd level she spends 1 skill point to increase her ranks in Knowledge(Nature) to 5. She now has a +9 bonus to her Knowledge(Nature)checks, but still only a +3 to her Knowledge(Geography) checks.

Are you trying to make the skill less abstract or provide characters with more knowledge-bang for their skill buck?

In the first case, the entire game is abstract so I wouldn't change something so minor, in the second you could assign players bonus skill points that can be only spent on Craft, Knowledge, Perform, or Profession skills - something I have thought about in the past (maybe 1/level - enough to have a little something to do out of combat, but not enough to step on the skill-mongers shoes).
