Knowledge skills

Is someone who takes Knowledge (local) supposed to pick a particular locale for their knowledge? Does this apply to any of the other knowledge skills? (e.g. geography, history, etc)

Interesting question, I can't wait to see others opinions on this.

IMC knowledge local is most definatly tied to a local, otherwise it is knowledge world. I work it like the 2e NWP used to work. The 2e NWP works like this, you take Knowledge local and then you add locals to it. You come into an area and spend some time studying the local history, geography, etc. and you gain that area to your skill. I rule that you are allowed one local for each rank in the skill.

Basically I view knowledge local as knowledge geography, nobility, history, etc. It is basically what someone who lives in the area for a long period of time would know but this profession allows the people to get that with only spending a week or so of study. So overtime and with travel a character can expand their knowledge local into a skill to know the entire world, but that takes a long time and a lot of travel.

Hope this helps.

IMC, Knowledge(Local) needs to be specified, such as Knowledge(Freeport). History, Geography, Planes, etc. are not specified.

Knowledge(Free City of Greyhawk) would allow the character a better chance to know a back alley way to get somewhere, the name of an obscure NPC connected with some issue, or the original function of a building that has changed businesses.

If someone tries to round out a character using ranks in any Knowledge skill, I'll go out of my way to create chances for the skill to be used.

I think that the knowledge skills are wacked. At a high level, a mage can, according to the rules, answer practically every impossible question about every plane in existence. He basically becomes omnipotent with respect to the planes... and any other subject for which he has taken the skill. I would rule that it is definitely a local type, in response to the original post.

I would rule Knowledge (Local) something like this:

Say, your character has Knowledge (History) 3, Knowledge (Home Province) 4 and Knowledge (Geography) 5 (let's just say he's a member of the Royal Society ;)).

Now, if I were the DM, I'd say you roll d20+4 to determine what you know of historic events in your home province and d20+5 for the lay of your land.

Basically, I'd substitute Knowledge (Local) for any other appropriate Knowledge skill if you have more ranks of it.

Does that make any sense to you?

In the FR, yes, all Knowledge:Local skills must be tied to a particular location.

In the core rules no, you can take Knowledge:Local as a skill, and it ends up being the DM's discretion whether or not it can be used in each situation.

Frankly I just got tired of the debates and reworked the whole thing.
