Actually, I believe they are unclassed humanoids.

Only the 1 HD humanoids in the MM have classes. If they have less HD (kobold) or more HD (lizardfolk) they don't have a class.

That's what it looks like-but I'm confused how that would be applied. A lizardfolk Ftr1 had 3 hit dice-2d8 (from his race) plus 1d10 (from his class level). Does a kobold Ftr1 have 2 hit dice? 1/2 d8 (from his race) plus 1d10 (from his fighter level)? And, per the revised rules, is a kobold necessarily an ECL 1 race?

According to the DMG (page 23, first paragraph), if a monster has 1 HD or less, the racial HD "level" is replaced by the class level.

If it has 2 HD or more, the class levels are in addition to the racial HD.

Any monster race which has more than one hit-die is presumed to have that many levels of "monster" (or rather, the appropriate TYPE of monster), which are subsumed in their ECL adjustment. IOW, a Lizardfolks Fighter(1) is -really- Lizardfolk(2)/Fighter(1). Note that "monster" levels do not count towards levelimbalance XP penalty calculations.

No, monsters with 1HD or fewer, do not have levels of "monster" at all, and so, gain no HD from their race -- just like with Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and so on.

Further, per the DMG, Kobolds are an "ECL 0" race ... they have no level adjustment trait ata ll. Also, identical ot PHB-stock races like Gnomes, Halflings, and Half-Orcs.

Jeesh, the rules forum? I mean, who reads the rules forum? :P

Kobolds aren't terribly underpowered as is, though I'd tend to remove the light sensitivity and drop the strength penalty to -2. But that just makes them like scaly halflings. Maybe they need a +2 charisma bonus, to represent the way that girls always coo over the cute little kobolds ;)

I'll have to agree with the CHA bonus in return for losing so much STR., not only because kobolds end up being "cute" (for a take on this one, I suggest you pick up the Small Beginnings Story Hour (link in the sig) - that little bugger Meepo has somehow weaseled his way into a certain sorceress' heart, and to this day, her player refuses to see him as nothing short of cuddly), but also because they are (at least in many campiagns) related to dragons.

I think the link to dragons can be evidenced in the idea that kobolds could still have the innate dragon fear/awe factor (which can be construed as the bonus on CHA). In our campaign world, kobolds definitely have a presence that overmatches their small size.

By the way, Sean Reynolds did a cute Kobold Sorcerer 3 by the name of Kevin in Cabal from Malhavoc Press.

I think you'll like her Meepo. ;)

Don't allow what, exactly? PCs as kobolds? If so, then you probably shouldn't allow halflings either! All kobold has over halfling (for AC) is a +1 natural armor bonus :-)

would you rather have +1 natural armor bonus or +1 to ALL saves... id say halfling & kobold are pretty equal. and halflings really should have lowlight vision.
