Kobolds

What is the environment? Any special conditions the party is under? What is party made up of in terms of classes? Any special equipment?

My initial thought is, at 12th level, hundreds, or maybe a thousand.

A tribe

400 base kobolds plus 20 3rd-level sergeant [mostly sorcerers], 2 lieutenants of 5th level, 1 leader of 8th level and 8 dire weasels.

Using portions of the leveled NPC's gear, distribute crossbows, caltrops, oil flasks, Alchemist fire and acid flasks among the ranks of the fodder.

alchemists fire is not cheap, but the prepared flask of oil are. The oil flasks don't even need to be lit since the PC's [or at least their squares] will already be lit.

Also, look into the "swarmfighting" feat. Just the feat hordes of kobolds need.

Assuming you have 4 players, i would suggest 18 kobolds.

first, you throw 17 level 2 kobold fighters at them, and when they start plowing through them, you bring in the gimp, a level 15 kobold priest of whatever diety fits according to your campaign.

With Divine Power and Righteous Might, this will be a kobold they will never forget :)

For a little inspiration, read Tucker's Kobolds in case you haven't already.

You may also want to check out the Mob rules in the Dungeon Master's Guide II, if you have access to it. If you want a bunch of Kobolds to overwhelm a party by grappling them and trampling them, the mob rules are great for that.

However many you add, make sure they they have the feats Weapon Focus (light crossbow), Point Blank Shot, and have at least one half-dragon Sorcerer in there. :)

Oh, and make them all "trollbolds" -- give them all Regeneration 1.
