L9 right for this custom spell?

Request your input on the new spell below. The objective is a "mass" effect Flesh to Stone.

Is there another existing spell that does the same thing? Is spell level 9 too high, or is the spell too powerful?

Thanks, O.P.

Stone Garden
Transmutation

Level: Sor/Wiz 9
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One or more creatures

As Flesh to Stone, except the spell affects a number of creatures (persons or not) whose combined HD do not exeed twice your level (or at least one creature regardless of HD). If there are more potential targets than you can affect, you choose them one at a time until you choose a creature exceeding your HD limit.

For starters definitely put a fort save on the spell. Then make it effect lowest hit dice creatures first. Lastly, make the spell over a limited area, say 30ft radius. That tones it done quite a bit, but the spell should probably still be 9th level due to the shere capacity to knock out enemies.

Note that since flesh to stone already has a save and there's no Saving Throw: None entry here, this already allows a fort save, as written.

I'd agree with limiting the area, but I'd say make it like horrid wilting. 50' raidus, caster chooses targets. Other than that it looks okay to me.

Personally, I dislike spells that target something besides Saving Throw -- this one also targets HD, which IMHO is a little too meta-game-ish.

I'd restrict it to one target per two caster levels, rounded down, within some radius -- and NOT limit the HD at all, since the Fort save already takes the victim's power level into account.

Other than that, excellent spell! :)

Hmm... good point. Using it as originally written, it would be super-effective against a crowd of commoners... perhaps too good. I like your idea.... accepted!

Other than that, excellent spell! :)

:D Gee thanks...

Stone Garden
Transmutation

Level: Sor/Wiz 9
Range: 50 ft. radius
Target: One creature/2 spellcaster levels

As Flesh to Stone, except the spell affects a number of creatures (persons or not) equal to half the caster's level, rounded down. If there are more potential targets than you can affect, you choose them one at a time until you reach your limit.

What do folks think about the 50 ft. radius? ValarX had mentioned 30. Other thoughts?
