LA for Half-Golems?

Hey all,

Maybe I missed it somewhere but has their ever been a declaration of what the Level Adjustment for the various Half-Golems in the MMII would be? (taking into consideration the 3.5 update they received).

I'd like to play a half-stone golem for an up coming campaign but I'm unsure as to what the template is worth level wise. My initial thought was +4 but then I considered the magic immunity it would receive so I bumped it to +8 but then I considered the fact that magic immunity would negate any beneficial spells as well, including healing magic, so I compromised to +6.

What are your thoughts? I saw someone has re-done the template over in house rules but I'm really keen on it as is. As a side note, what kind of things should I look out for, or strive to remember when playing such a character?

But mostly, what LA does the half-stone golem template clock in as for you?

I'm not really sure how CR and LA compare mathematically but Crystal Keep lists the various increases to CR, if that helps any.

To be honest, most DM's will just flat out disallow the half-golem template on PCs. (The LA is irrevelant if the DM doesn't let you play one.) I certainly wouldn't allow them in any sort of nonepic game.

If you get DM approval, I'd say the +8 LA is worth just the immunity to magic alone. And I'm pretty sure they get some other nice boosts.
 


Clay gets berserk - I'd lean towards that not being a good thing.
Additionally, +Str, +Con (assuming successful save), doesn't totally make up for your now craptacular Will save, and reduced Reflex save, plus you can't run.
Though, the DR, Natural Armor bonus, and magical immunities are quite good.

Mithral Half-Golem is flat-out pure epic brutality, though.
That's my particular favorite among half-golems.

Are there any effects requiring a will save which actually effect a half-golem?
 


If you're just going for story value, just use the stats for a warforged from Eb.

If you're just going for munchiness... well, good luck.

I had this exact same thought last night while I was re-evaluationg the situation.

Which Dragon had the half-machine? That also sounds interesting.

I can't remember off the top of my head. It also had the adventure where one of the adventure locations was inside a walking iron colossus. I'll poke around for it when I get home tonight. I think it was from about 3-4 years ago (it was 3.0).
