Ok, an lvl7 Ogre (+2 LA) Sorcerer dies, his buddies use Reincarnate and bring him back as a human. Now, what level is he?
Okay, putting aside the fact that as an ogre (giant type) he'd reincarnate as other giants instead of as humanoids~ ignoring that for now.

He'd come back as a 5th lvl character. He's just shed his +2 LA. He does not magically sprout levels to keep him up to date with being an ECL 7 character, he's just lost his level adjustment and all he's left with are his 5 class levels.

Actually, I take that back. He's a 4th level character. He lost his +2 LA, and he loses a level from being brought back to life.

The slight up side is that he'll level quicker than the rest of the party, needing less exp to gain a level than everyone else does.

But yeah, kinda stings, don't it? It's just as bad in the other direction, too. Come back as a race with a lot of racial HD and +LA? Guess what your next levels get to be in? :p

heh, ok, yeah, Ogre was a bad example. Pick a humanoid LA+2 race then. :D

So, what would one's Xp be put at? Cause if memory serves (and don't get me wrong, my memory is more brass sieve than steel vice), aren't you supposed to be put at 50% of the previous level?

Note, that I agree entirely with the aformentioned interpretation of the rules. I'm just curious to see if the RAW are as wonky as they seemed.

Heh, to be frank, yeah it's pretty darn wonky. Reincarnate is a big ol' heap of issues just waiting to happen.

Anyway, as for your exp total: you come back at the half-way point for the level you come back at.

A reincarnated creature recalls the majority of its former life and form. It retains any class abilities, feats, or skill ranks it formerly possessed. Its class, base attack bonus, base save bonuses, and hit points are unchanged. Strength, Dexterity, and Constitution scores depend partly on the new body. First eliminate the subject’s racial adjustments (since it is no longer of his previous race) and then apply the adjustments found below to its remaining ability scores. The subject’s level (or Hit Dice) is reduced by 1. If the subject was 1st level, its new Constitution score is reduced by 2. (If this reduction would put its Con at 0 or lower, it can’t be reincarnated). This level/HD loss or Constitution loss cannot be repaired by any means.

I'd say that LA is an feature of the race and since you're no longer that race, you lose the LA. Your experience total is set to half-way between level 4 and 5. This is how I interpret it at least.

either way...just my 2 cp
