LA + Reincarnate = Whaaa?

When you lose a level, your "experience point total is immediatly set to the midpoint of the previous level", so as you have experience points sufficient to be 12th level, I think you just add levels.

From the SRD (bolding mine):

I'd say that LA is an feature of the race and since you're no longer that race, you lose the LA. Your experience total is set to half-way between level 4 and 5. This is how I interpret it at least.

either way...just my 2 cp

First eliminate the subject’s racial adjustments (since it is no longer of his previous race) and then apply the adjustments found below to its remaining ability scores. The subject’s level (or Hit Dice) is reduced by 1.

You could read that another way.

Racial adjustments could just be meaning the attribute adjustments.

If he's fifth level sorcerer with a LA +2 race he's 21,000+ XP his character level is 7th. You then reduce the subject's (character) level by 1 to make him half way between 6th and 7th.

Which is precisely, rules-wise, what makes this whole thing so intrigueing. I was hoping something in the FAQ had addressed it, but I must have glossed over it, if it was there.

I'd be tempted to rule my way, if only because the player is already falling one level behind the rest of the party for dying if he then falls his LA behind as well he's going to feel/be really outclassed, and would probably rather just start a new character.

Note that you can't be reincarnated against your will, and you get to know what you're coming back as before you accept. I'm picky -- I'd turn down reincarnation if it messed with my character concept to severely.
