In subsequent rounds, yes. You can use the lance as a standard melee weapon with reach and, when on a horse, use it one handed.

Surprisingly, it really isn't. The trained lancer holds it in such a way that he can use it's length to his advantage, without worrying too much about it's weight. The butt of the lance comes up under the shoulder, providing an anchor point for the majority of the weight. His own body weight counter acts that force. He uses his hand or elbow as a fulcrum point (depending on the specific attack) to reduce the strain on his muscles, allowing him to continue fighting for longer periods of time.
The real challenge is switching between distances. The lancer has to remove the lance from it's pocket, shift half the lance upward, and use it in a downward stabbing motion to hit anything near to his horse. There is a "dead zone" about five feet away in all directions (from the lancer, not the horse) that the lancer can't effectively reach with his weapon whatsoever.

Oh, I can see poking and jabbing and attacking..but full Attack and Damage? That just seems unreasonable.
