Laptop shopping

Okay, I found a Dell Vostro 1500 on their small business pages that had what I was looking for (discrete graphics, XP, etc.); add in a $500 coupon code I found online, and I spent most of my tax return. :)

Thanks for the advice, folks.

You'd think... but that's not entirely true. There are, now, a bunch of laptops in which XP simply won't work.

Carefully read reviews!
It may be that they won't run XP, but I'll bet they will run Linux (or will very shortly after the hardware hits the streets)! And that means you can install a virtualization solution and run XP inside that. :)

(Free virtualization choices include VMware, VirtualBox, QEmu, and others.)

So, I'm looking for a new laptop, and I don't want Windows Vista; I'd rather get XP. Dell will sell me an Inspiron 1520 with XP.

It (now) comes only with integrated video, but they used to have an option (as lately as a month ago, apparently) to get separate NVidia card; so I'm thinking maybe I can get one later, and add it myself. Or not. Who knows.

Anyways, anybody got any horror stories about the Inspiron 1520?

Im typing this on an Inspiron 1520 right now and I highly recommend it.

It seems to be a good machine overall and is both a good games machine and a good multi-media PC imo.

Ive had mine for about a month and Im loving it so far.

I'm in the market for a new laptop too. After considering a few Dell machines --I'm composing this on an old Dell Inspiron 6000-- I stumbled across this:

Microexpress IFL9025

It's currently in the top slot on PCWorld's list of top ten power laptops even though it's got more of a bargain laptop price.

I'm getting one as soon as I figure out how much money the vacation to Iceland that I'm currently on is going to end up costing....
