Large greatsword

First Post
Our group just found a large greatsword + 2.
Everybody in the group is medium sized. One in the group regulary goes large by using a wand of enlarge person.
We are only using core-rules.
Would you agree that there is no way that any member in the group can actually *use* that weapon?

The guy who uses enlarge person regularly can wield it, as long as he drops it before getting enlarged in the first place. Would only be worth the extra step, imo, if it was the character's only magic weapon.

Hmm, I was quite sure that this wouldnt work. As soon as he picks up the sword, it gets huge. Similiar to javelins which get medium again after leaving the large person.

There is nothing in the spell that says the reverse is true (picking up something enlarges it).

As rvalle says, the enlarged character can drop the sword before being enlarged, and it will be unaffected by the spell. Or he can drop it after being enlarged, and it will revert to its normal size, and stay that way even after he picks it up again.

Improvised (i.e. -4) pole-arm.

I'm not sure that works.

When you use something as an improvised weapon, the first step is to find the closest equivalent from the Weapons table, from which you determine the characteristics of the improvised weapon.

The closest equivalent from the Weapons table is... a Large greatsword. Which means that as an improvised weapon, it's too large for a Medium creature to wield.

Well, I personally allow things like using:
1) The haft of a polearm as an improvised quarterstaff
2) A spear as an improvise lance (for extra damage while mounted)
3) A lance as an improvised spear (for extra damage when set against a charge)
4) An arrow as an improvised dagger (that's even in the rules).
5) A large rapier as an improvised lance
6) A large spiked gauntlet as an improvised morningstar
7) A huge crossbow bolt as an improvised shortspear (or possibly an improvised javelin)
8) A large greatsword as an improvised longspear (or possibly a glaive).
etc.

But that's me. I can agree that this is entirely up to the DM, but you can't really state that this can't be done. It also provides a nice answer when some joker wants reach because he's wielding a huge sunsword ("sure you can have reach... but you'll do less damage, and your sword related feats aren't going to apply").
