Large Monsters and difficult terrain

Large monsters take up 4 squares. What happens if an effect creates difficult terrain, but 2 of the 4 squares become difficult terrain?

Can the large monster shift away (since "one leg" if you will is on non-difficult terrain), or is it still hampered moving out of the difficult terrain because some of its space is in the area?

PHB, p. 284: "If such a creature enters two or more squares with different types of terrain, count that square of movement according to the most difficult terrain."
 


You can always shift out of difficult terrain. The squares that affect movement are the ones you're entering.


Specificly, let's assume a large monster has two squares in difficult terrain, and there's no difficult terrain around him.

Where X is the difficult terrain, O is his other occupied space. It does not matter that he's -in- difficult terrain. If he moves to the right, even tho his 'back end' is 'entering' the terrain, he's not technically entering new terrain. Entering terrain only concerns new squares the individual experiences. So he could, in this case, move in any direction without a movement penalty.

To sum up: When adjudicating difficult terrain for a large creature, only look at the new squares he's entering, not squares he's already inhabited, even if it's not the same parts of his model inhabiting it.
 

Thanks. That's helpful, and yet now I'm disappointed that large monster lost a round trying to get out of difficult terrain it was *half* in.
