D&D 5E Larger Weapons

No it was a slang term that arose in the Grand Old Days of the MUD. I remember using back in Gemstone (I think it was Gemstone III).

Yep. It sounds like a post-hoc thing, but it really isn't, it's ancient as you say, and as the internet existed at the time, it really seems to have come from "mobile object".

I read a hilarious thread on a Guild Wars 2 forum where people, all of them apparently either relatively new to MMOs or really young, were trying to determine where "toon" for "character" came from. The true explanation, that being that it came from the fact that The Realm Online (which was one of the first big graphical MUDs, pre-dating even Meridian 59 in it's semi-open beta), where your PC was literally a cartoon, was ignored in favour of various bizarre revisionist theories (none of which accounted for the fact that "toon" was well-established as a term for "character" by the time EQ was out).

As for larger weapons, hmmm, not sure about that rule - I'd have doubled the dice, myself, if going for simplicity. It's begging for a return to combat-Enlarging and Large PC races and so on, though. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it is a thing.

Oh my god that really takes me back. I remember beta testing The Realm and the upheaval of moving out of beta. Good times.
