LARPers and D&D players

Do you players of D&D ever play LARP?

Most people know LARPS and think Vampire since those are the most famous. But There are as many different kinds of LARPS as there are table top games. I was in a Paranoia LARP at Origins and that is nothign like the Vampire LARPS, it's actually more player friendly and comical. Buffy LARPS are also a lot of fun.

I don't have any animosity towards LARPs. The times I've tried it just didn't sync with my gaming sensibilities. The Vampire LARP I played in was with some that were just too into it and into lifestyles that didn't sit well with my own. The playtest, while fun, was simply not what I was looking for out of a game.

I have seen some "boffer" LARPs. Those look like they could be fun and right up my alley as long as everyone was laid back about (kinda the way I feel about gaming in general).

Just curiosity... one of our gamer has been LARPing on a few occasion, it seems it's quite popular in my region, but I haven't met anyone but her (or at least, no one confessed it has done it ;) ). She seems quite on the brink of quitting our D&D group for lack of time, but says she'll never quit LARPing, on the contrary she's been recently inviting me to join them for a try.
Seems to me like you're asking all the wrong questions, Li Shenron. What you should be asking is
  1. Is she hot?
  2. Is she single?
  3. Are you?
  4. "Hey, baby--I've got a great LARP we can play upstairs..."

I've been in two.

The first was a weekend-long one that was fantasy based and I hated it. I have vivid recollections of being very lightly tapped on each arm by a dual-weilding squirt who kept muttering "two damage" every time he touched me. I honestly felt like punching him in the nose and yelling "NOW THAT IS TWO DAMAGE!" That was about 10 years ago.

My second attempt at LARPing was the Paranoia LARP Crothian mentioned. That was much more fun although it ran very late. It was a 11pm-3am game and I started fading after 1am. Although I did sneak out for a double scotch, that probably didn't help things. In a fine tribute to Paranoia, it took me and my buddy 20 minutes to leave the room and I think we died a total of three times on our way out.

I doubt I'd be interested in doing a "serious" LARP again. But I'd do a comic one. Well, maybe if I took a nap first.

I've never LARP'd, but I'd be willing to give it a try under the right circumstances. Although these days I am so lacking in physical stamina that I'm not sure I'd really be up for it.

I haven't tried it, but I would ... given the right* kind of opportunity. It seems to me, that it could be something that goes right up my (slightly maniacal) sense of humour and the absurd. I mean, like doing LARP in the middle of a busy marketplace, watching the people think 'where the **** did THOSE escape from?' ... :D

*As in 'I get invited by a good friend, get to know the people for some time and find we're on the same wavelength'.

Which may be what she was thinking. Seems the for a long time the Seattle area Cam LARPs were just gamer meat markets to most of the players.

Personally, I'm waiting for the Katamari Damacy LARP.

I've been to some LARPs at cons and not really had a very good time. While some were quite interesting in theory, such as Dark Confrontantion, I didn't think they did well in execution. I tried Shattered Isles, and while it was certainly well-organized and well-run, I don't have a great deal of physical endurance. The Georgia summer, the outdoors, the camping facilities and such killed any fun I might have had.

I am absolutely sure this has been asked before, but I'd like to do a quick survey :)

How many of you have been LARPing?
If you have, did you like it or hate it?
If you haven't, do you like the idea or hate it?

Is it possible not to like it and not to hate it at the same time? :p

I admit I can't say I know much about it, but I've always imagined it quite, well... embarassing :p
You could become the Black Prince of Muncie!
