The design can be explained by the fact that they call it a PHASR. Looks like bad Star Trek design to me.

And, personally, I want my laser rifle to have the "Flambe" and "Mertilize" settings.

I saw that, and it really makes me wonder how many scientists out there are trying to develop something that they saw on Star Trek or a similar series. But seriously, if they're going to call it a phaser, it should be smaller. That looks more like a Compression Phaser Rifle or a Type III Phaser Rifle to me.

Well, I imainge before they can call it type III they need a Type I and a Type II.

Since then over the years I have thrown together a few makeshift penlight weapon designs in
my head. I don't see what is so original about this "PHASR".

Nobody says the idea was original. The concept has been tried before - it's so unoriginal that the UN has guidelines about it.

This isn't news because it is an original idea. It is news because it works within the guidelilnes so that it might make an appearance on the battlefield.
