Layout for Secure Shelter

Is this in a book or created by you (or your group?) because I am so snagging this- its very nice. :)

Hi Harmon,

Unfortunately this is not a book spell but handcrafted by me... or well my character Lucifus Cray (See story hour in sig.)

However, I'd like to think it's pretty balanced and not abusable - with the potential for significant loss if anything was to happen to his miniature mithril tower focus; similar to Leomund's Secret Chest. It provides a good addition to Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion as it is not superceded by this spell. Both have utility and their own separate uses.

There is of course a legal way how to get this spell into your game. The DMG allows spellusers to craft and research new spells and this is how I got it into the game. As a 6th level spell, it costs 6000gp and 6 weeks to research with a fairly easy spellcraft check at the end of it (DC 10 + spell level). Obviously, the research fails if the DM does not like or want the spell in their game. See page 198 of the DMG on "Researching Original Spells".
I can at least report that the spell in use so far has been effective but not overpowered.

Best Regards
Herremann the Wise

This thread is making me want to try to finangle a secure shelter token, that my bard can throw down at night. Everyone else is setting up their tents, and boom! hut, windows, walls, bed.

It's a shame it's looking to cost about 10K to make. A bit much for what amounts to a tent.

Token's are one-use items no? I was thinking of doing a wonderous item with the formula being:

(Caster lvl 7 x spell lvl 4 x 1800 gp for command activated items) divided by 5 for one use per day limitation. Duration is 2 hours/lvl.

All of this is from memory, so don't roast me if Im wrong. I already said I was bad at math!

Well, not a token then. But a wondrous item.

And yeah, that was what I was thinking of as well. Exactly the same thing, even. That works out to 10,080 gp. A bit pricey for what I'm looking for.

Right. We're talking about the same thing. 5k cost to create is pretty steep.

Chronus has four item creation feats that in total reduce the gp and xp cost to create by 50% so it's not too bad for him (GM's ruling on Eberron feats that allow this). Few crafters can match that however. 2.5k is not bad for some comfort in the sticks.

2.5 is definitely more reasonable.

When you don't have any magic or magic item feats, you're fairly screwed on the cost. Unless you try to talk the DM into allowing it for cheaper.

Aye. Even if you have access to the feats, it's a real committment to crafting to sink those feats PLUS the respective item creation feats. The payoff is pretty nice though. You can make cheesy items for fun and RPing: Chronus' Cozy Cottage figurine.

Don't forget the reduction you can get for Requiring a specific class or alignment for use. Lots of DMs poopoo that on these boards, but I think it's legit (so does my GM) especially for an item like this. 30% reduction brings down the cost to create to a managable range even without feats for discounts.

Huh. Can you stack that?

This item can only be used by a CG bard, for 3 times the 30% reduction?

Divide cost by 5 because it can only be used once per day. Final cost is reduced by 30% for bard limitation (or wizard or whatever single class you want). GM's call, as always, though the RAW says its cool.
