learning new spells

The situation:

My 4th level mage leveled at the end of last weeks session. I have access to someone elses spellbook. I am not ina situation where I can spend a significant amount of time to learn new spells.

The questions:

Will it take me 4 days to scribe my "free" spells into my spellbook? Or do I get them immediatley?

Can I memorize spells from my other spellbook (after making the spellcraft roll) or do they need to be in my spellbook?

Thanks.

Page 155 in the PHB had the rule but I didn't really understand when I reread it.

You get your two free spells immediately, with no cost in time or money. The assumption is that you have been working on these in your spare time.

For the spells in the other spellbook, you need to scribe them into your own spellbook before you can prepare them. So you need to make the Spellcraft roll, scribe each spell, spending 1 day + 1 per spell lvl on each spell, taking up 2 pgs per spell lvl in your spellbook, and spending 200 gp per spell level (so a Fireball, for example, will take 4 days, 6 pages and 600 gp).

But wait!

You can prepare a spell out of someone else's spellbook. But it has to be a spell you've had in one of your own spellbooks at some point. Since you've not ever cast the spells in question before, you'll have to spend the time scribing them first.

Ask your DM if he uses the training rules, if he does you must complete the training before you get the spells.

Mastering Another's Spellbook

There are rules in Magic of Faerun (if you're using non-core books) for mastering the spells in another's spellbook. We use this rule in our campaigns as it helps to offset the somewhat high costs of scribing new spells into your spellbook.

We also use that rule, it seems silly, that you cannot use someone else's spellbook, since it should contain all the information you need. You just need to figure out, how that mage has written them, since that can be drastically different to your own style.

We also lowered the cost of scribing spells considerably (down to 1/10th), since it's so ridiculously high. But that's a house rule, of course.

Bye
