Leatherbound PHB: Would you buy this?

Would you buy this?

  • Not really. I already have the PHB.

  • Probably. I mean, it *is* my favorite hobby, yes?

Sure, I'll buy one, then do my best to get it signed. I easily piss away $75 over the course of a month, so why not spend it on something durable. I doubt it'll ever see actual game use, but it'll be nice to have.

I've ordered the GURPS Basic Set Deluxe Edition ($125) for the upcoming GURPS 4th edition - but only because 90% of my games use GURPS *and* because it's GURPS: it will probably take another 16 years for the next edition to come out. OTOH I'm expecting the arrival of D&D4.0 within 54 months (which won't bother me, since by then I'll probably running 100% of my games in GURPS 4e, and I'll have enough Scarred Lands, Midnight, and Dawnforge 3.X stuff to last a lifetime of campaigns;))

But D&D came out before GURPS, yet GURPS is coming out with 4e first.

I'm usually a sucker for this kind of thing, but at $75? Uh, let me see.....No.

Especially when it is just a reprint.

No.

I may have purchased it if it had at least had the errata updated, but Andy Collins has said that it's just a reprint with a nice binding.

That's disappointing. :\

If they had used this opportunity to correct the errata, and perhaps expanded it to include more spells and/or other features then I would have bought it in a heartbeat.

Even if they had just updated the errata, it would have been enough for me. Without errata, I cannot justify buying another PHB no matter how good it looks...

Nope, zero interest.

My prize possession in rpg'ing is my Three Little Books.

Books don't tend to appreciate in value (no matter what people tell you), so all you will have in a few years is a very expensive set of out-of-date rules. This is one of those ultimate White Elephant purchases.

Maybe an In-Plano format leather-bound monster manual that would compilate all those from MM, MM2, FF, MM3, MOF, and the monster sections of the other books (MotP, EPH, D&Dg, OA, FRCS, etc.) published by WotC...

All organized like a good bestiary, by categorical chapters.

But otherwise, why bother? It's not really a deluxe collector goody, just a different binding for the exact same book.

I doubt I would be willing to spend the money, but I would have to see it up close to be sure. We all chipped in and pre-ordered the "leatherbound" special edition of the Ravenloft source book from S&S Studios when it came out as a gift to our DM. The cover was quite a disappointment: thin, looked like synthetic leather and just not very well done.

If the PHB is the same, no way, not even if I won the lottery.
