Leaving Indy for 2006?

Orlando: Getting away from the midwestern heart of the convention, a convention in Florida during hurricane season (how many years until the convention is cancelled becuase of a storm?), high prices down in Florida too. I know I'd not be able to go probably if it was that far away.

While I agree that Orlando isn't a centrally located site. I just don't understand this idea that people have of Orlando being expensive. Yes, a Disney vacation is expensive... but staying in a hotel in Florida is pretty darn inexpensive. And Orlando is far enough inland that we don't really feel the full force of hurricanes.

That said, I wouldn't choose Orlando for GenCon. It's not within driving distance of anywhere except Georgia. While there is ample hotel space, nothing is within "walking" distance. Orlando doesn't "need" GenCon the way a place like Indianapolis does. You would never see a restaurant/bar like the Ram in Orlando.

Have never been to GenCon but have read many anecdotes from it on these boards.

Thinking about the stereotypical gamer funk.

And you think 25K+ gamers in 110-degree heat is a good idea?! :D

Hold it in winter?

Of course, a western location for the main GenCon would probably kill GenCon SoCal (or replace it, if they just expanded things in Anaheim), and they'd probably establish a GenCon East as the smaller, secondary con.

I'd like to see it moved eastward as well. ;) Isn't Orgins in Ohio? If they do move it east, while I'd love for it to be in Boston. I think it would be in NYC.

Just shows the varied perspectives. Indianapolis seems like the East Coast, to me. Yeah, I know it's technically Midwest.

Winter Fantasy used to held in Wisconsin in January/February. It was and still is primarily an RPGA con but it was held in the Hyatt itself and was always a blast.

As for the move...I'm from Wisconsin, about 25 minutes away from downtown Milwaukee, and I liked the move to Indianapolis. Liked The Ram better than The Safehouse. Like the number of resturants and eateries surrounding the convention center. Like the facility better than the Midwest Center.

I'll travel to wherever it goes. It's always a blast.
