Theroc,

I certainly do not mean to dissuade you from playing as a controller. The only thing you need to remember about playing a controller is that you won't be pushing out large amounts of damage to a single enemy. Your job will be to make bad guys's lives a lot more difficult.

You may be getting the vibe that I don't like controllers, and this is partially true. But only in the respect that I won't play as one. To me, I think a Striker is a better way to go, simply because the best form of control is a dead bad guy. This is my personal flavor and way I play the game. I have played with a few controllers, however, that have used their spells to great effect and have even been able to out-do my strikers in certain situations.

So my advice is, really, to play whatever it is you want to play as! If you don't iike the idea of wizard, I would say go with Invoker. It will play a lot like the wizard, except that you won't have to read a book, instead you will have a direct divine connection to your god(ess).

Theroc,

I LOVE controllers. If it was a timed game they are not as useful as a striker. That is because a controller slows the pace of battle down, sections off enemies, and reduces actions taken by said enemies. This helps to keep the strikers more effective, allowing them to concentrate on one enemy at a time, and remove damage from the board. (see Kalidrev above why this is the more "important" position.) During that process, the other enemies do less damage, while waiting their turn to die.

Go invoker if you want to use the summoning rules. Go Druid if you want to induce status effects.

Like Kalidrev said, don't expect to do big damage! (Though with the right build you could, if that is what you were shooting for, be a sorcerer, or other AoE striker.)

Also note that some class are not pure role. I think of the Sorcerer. I'm playing one in a group among a Figther, a Bard and a Druid. The Defender and Leader are clear, but when it come to time for Striker/Controller, the Druid and the Sorcerer share the role. I would even say the Sorcerer is more Controller as I focus on controlling powers (mainly moving people on the field) while the Druid is a Predator and thus, more strikish.

most classes have a decent amount of secondary function. The fighter does more damage (striker-ish) and the swordmage has a minor in controller.

I wasn't anticipating the high/heavy damage. Though, the sorcerer I built for a Talking the Talk game seemed pretty status based itself.

One of the reasons the Controller appealed is I like AoE. Sorcerer has that but is 1. One of the most common classes on LEB atm, and 2. More of a striker than a controller, and 3. Most of it's AoE's seemed to be Close type stuff.

Though, it sounds as the Invoker doesn't apply many conditions to foes. How exactly do they control if not by status effects?

Also, what are the 'summoning rules'? I've not heard of them. Are you talking about something outside of the PHB and PHB2?

Yeah, but as you start level 4 and starts with 412gp (if I remember right), you can afford it.
I CAN start off at 4th. that doesn't mean I have too and it doesn't alter the fact that if I wanted to start at 1st I couldn't have a ring. ;)

Level 1 characters get rental rings.
LOL I'll have to look into that. ;)

I'm hoping they are prestige/status items and not something all members of the house are expected to have. A 150gp 'tax' to be in a house seems pretty steep if everyone has to have them. Could someone explain just how the rings are used and how common they are?

I'm playing an Invoker at lvl1 in LEW. His encounter daze and push, his daily hurt if people move during there next turn, but his at-will only damage. I think like most PHB2 class, the primary and secondary role take importance as much as you want to, by taking the proper powers.
