D&D General Left the Campaign / Need Closure for Character

Recently I asked if I should leave my friend's Spelljammer game, due to my work schedule and a few other issues. The consensus was that I should and I have left on agreeable terms. I'm welcome back any time.

Thing is, I really loved my character - a halfling aberrant mind sorcerer/GOO warlock. We were on a quest to assemble the Rod of Seven Parts and defeat Vecna. This was the DM's original story and not related at all to the Vecna adventure WotC put out.

I am feeling a need for closure, and I'm not sure what to do about it. A few thoughts I had.

1. Play in a Vecna: Eve of Ruin campaign. Downside is that I'd have to go through collecting all the pieces again.
2. Run Vecna: Eve of Ruin and make him a DMPC or prominent NPC.
3. Write some fan fiction just for myself to finish the story.
4. See if I can make a guest appearance in the DM's other game that I play in.
5. Just retire him and get over it.

What other options are out there and what would be the best course of action? And why do I overthink these things?

Not quite the same position you were in, but I've been through something similar. Was in a great Dungeon World game, lasted about a year, we were like...two or three sessions at most from finishing, and then we had to take a break because the GM and his wife were about to begin a new school year, while taking care of their nephew. Game never met back up and I haven't spoken to any of the players in years.

The big question here is, do you want to display your success, or do you just want to experience that success? If the former, then--with extreme care--you might make him a prominent NPC, but I would avoid making him an outright DMPC.

But if the group is amenable to you coming in for a "guest star" appearance, then awesome, that sounds like the best of both worlds. Otherwise the safe option is writing your personal fiction ending and sharing it with the group if they're interested. That's the route I took myself, and while it wasn't as satisfying as actually playing through it, it was still reasonably satisfying. I knew exactly where things were going, it was just a matter of doing it and seeing how my friends could contribute to the end goal, which helped; it sounds like your character might've been a bit further off than that, so it's a bit more open-ended than my situation was.
