Legacy of Acererak

Crap, I can't log in!

Anyone care to tell me what the Curious Archeologist background is about?

You have an interest in old "historical" sites. Whenever you engage in a skill challenge to disable a trap, your first successful thievery check grants you an additional success.

Interesting. There's nothing actually about Acererak or his tomb (except the little part about Moil), but it's still nice.
Was hoping for a reprint of the Tomb of Horrors map. ;)

Anybody else getting:

Microsoft VBScript compilation error '800a03e9'

Out of memory

/default.asp, line 0

at Wizards? I've been receiving this error all day.

It's going okay for me now, but that error is very common...

I guess it's okay, they are providing a free service... I mean, it'd only be really frustrating if you were shelling out money to access their digital content, right?

There are a few, but not many:
Bloodfiend's Terror Gaze
Beholder's Fear Ray
Aftereffect of some dragons' frightful presence (dracoliches' presence have no save)
Wailing Ghost's Death's Visage and Terrifying Shriek
Tormenting Ghost's Burst of Terror
Larva Mage's Horrific Visage
Mummy Lord's Awe Strike
Eye of Gruumsh's Eye of Wrath
Rakshasa Nobles Frightful Phantom
Sphinx' Frightful Roar
Thanks for the reference.

I honestly think that is too few to have the Halfling getting the +5 bonus. If anything, I think the halfling should get a boost to DEFENSE vs. Fear effects (as there are more fear-keyword attacks than there are fear-keyword conditions that grant a saving throw).

Sounds like a good idea for a racial feat to me. :) Or possibly a halfling paladin feat in Divine Power, to get the "fearless paladin" back in a small way (no pun intended). :p

Those heritage feats give a +2 unnamed bonus to a skill? Can you say power creep?

These kind of bonuses seem innocent because its to a skill, and people don't think about the power of skills until they see a really really big bonus in it.

Backgrounds. Heritage feats are something else.
Can you say power creep?
Yes, quite easily. :p As mentioned, they are not feats, so they don't even cost a feat slot.

That's why I would not allow them to stack with racial bonuses. Perhaps the simplest way is to just make them "racial" bonuses as well. After all, the optional benefit for the Necromancer's Chattel background provides a racial bonus to saving throws against fear effects.
