Legends & Lairs question

Jürgen Hubert

First Post
As most folks, I'm intrigued by the current Legends & Lairs fire sale, and I'm wondering what books to pick up.

Cityworks, obviously, since I'm creating a campaign world based around cities, but what else?

To give you an idea of my tastes, I'm mostly a Dungeon Master, rather than a player. Long lists of spells, prestige classes, feats etc. bore me to tears. And I'm not really all that interested in simple lists of monsters or new PC races, either, unless they are really brilliant - I'm more interested in presenting existing races and monsters in new and interesting ways. Instead, I'm interested in tools to help me build new and interesting worlds, locations, and adventures - toolkits that make me more flexible and give me more ideas. I like books that get me thinking on new aspects of settings that I hadn't thought of before.

So, which books would you suggest?

Go for Dungeoncraft and Cityworks.

What's Dungeoncraft like?

In most of my adventures, I don't really use that many classical "dungeons" - for one thing, I have troubles justifying how traps could still be functioning after hundreds of years, and for another I'm just too lazy to draw big maps. But maybe I should reconsider...

I already own them all. The books are amazing!

Traps and Treachery I and II
Cityworks
Dungeoncraft
Wildscape
Darkness and Dread
Twisted Lore
Monster's Handbook
Portals and Planes
Sorcery and Steam

Those books just rock.

It wouldn't be a good choice for you, then.

I edited Belen's list to accomodate my own opinion, but yeah, these books do rock. Especially for five bucks apiece. I enjoyed the Path of... series, especially of Shadow. But I like rogues, so color me kooky.

Nifty thing, this sales. So, I look around, chose three of them that sounds interesting, then check out.

Shipping cost: at the lowliest, $27.50. For a $15.00 order, it isn't worth it.

So, I cancelled the whole deal. :(

I really like these:
-Wildscape (gives you the tools to add more environmental factors, including hazards, into your game)
-Portals & Planes (combined with Manual of the Planes and Planar Handbook and you've got a kickin' extraplanar campaign)
-Dungeoncraft (toolkit for designing classic dungeons)
-Cityworks
-Darkness & Dread (designed for running a low magic horror campaign, but the chapters on Forbidden Tomes and Black Magic make it worth the $5.00)

*Note: All of the above were written by Mike Mearls.

I also recommend:
-Traps & Treachery (only the first third of the book deals with 3.0, while the rest is all traps that you can populate your wod with. Very cool book.)
-Traps & Treachery II (the sequel, need I say more?)
-Path of ... books (personally, I like these a lot better than the Wotc class/splat books. You do have to be a little careful of some of the classes and power creep. But overall, good investments for the sale price.)

How is Wildscape?

Also, which of the 'Path' books is 3.5?

Wildscape is one of my favorite books. Heck, I reference Dungeonscraft, Wildscape, and Cityscape nearly as much as the core rules. Although they seem "lite" on the first flip-through, once you start reading, they are chock-full of useful ideas and excellent, easily used "crunch". If you don't pick these ones up, you'll be kicking yourself later.

After all, it is the holidays. Give yourself a present.
