Leif's "Hold of the Sea Princes" Greyhawk Alpha Game [AD&D 1E] [IC 01]

As the group approaches Redding Flat Pop. 28, Shiyana is keeping her eyes peeled for any small (or large, I guess for that matter) animals that may be in the surrounding countryside. She'd prefer something "wild" to something domesticated, figuring they would have been able to travel about/see more than some poor penned up beast.

<OOC: I'm looking for something to "Speak with Animals" with in hopes of getting a lay of the land and any news on what's been going on here recently>

Shiyana - There are no birds out now as they've all gone to roost. Give me a % roll - 01-30% Shiyana will spot a coyote, 31-55% an owl 'who' just woke up.

[OOC: Jacob Marley - Cool! How did it work for you?]

Roll added to previous post....:( 62. Damn.

Shiyana doesn't see anything and goes into town with the rest of the group.

Odo will walk directly (and determinedly) toward the first person/homestead he sees.

Hail noble farmers! I am Odo, Acolyte of Pholtus. My companions and I have heard of your plight. We have come to aid you.

It worked very well. The encounter was between three ogres, who were rampaging through a small thorp, and the 4 PCs, who were 3rd level at the time. (A very challenging encounter!) The ogres' goal was destruction. They would kill people indirectly, focusing most of their efforts on destroying property instead.

The PCs earned their experience based on the challenge rating of the ogres minus 10 xp per person killed and minus 50 xp per building/cart/etc. destroyed. Since the party was not being directly attacked each round by the ogres (only indirectly via attacks of opportunity) it seemed to be about the right amount of xp given out based on the challenge at hand.

The players told me after the encounter that that was a really fun time. They really enjoyed the tactical challenge of the encounter.

A nervous face looks around the edge of a door at Odo, a finger goes to lips, imploring silence, and then an arm motions the heroes to quickly come inside. Assuming that you do so, the door is quickly shut and barred behind you. The home is simple but functional and comfortable. The man's wife and four children are huddled together beside the fireplace but it is not cold at all. "Please come in. Are you really come to save us? We have no gold to offer you, but such as we have we give you -- we have good food, venison and fowl, hearty ale, and you're welcome to shelter here with us. We are poor, simple folk, but we deserve better than to be the playthings of these great brutes. For your help we are truly grateful indeed."

Turthain keeps his bow in hand, his eyes wary as if expecting the ogres to assault the place at any time. "How many are there," he asks the man.

"Ahem! By the way, I am called Groll. I remember one time when I saw five or six of the big brutes, I think, could have been more. They all look kinda the same, you know."

"You must forgive my friend's kurt manner, Master Groll. It is nice to meet you though I am sorry for the circumstances." Shiyana replies [OOC: keep in mind, if necessary, that Shiyana's Charisma is 16 - +20% loyalty, +25% reaction adj.].

Five or six ogres! she thinks to herself. She looks to Turthain and Odo, hoping their magics will be at their fullest before they face the monstrous brutes. Her own enchantments for the day, she fears, will be of little help. She is sure Camlin, her stalwart defender, is ready for anything. Shiyana is careful not to betray any of her concerns on her own face.

She turns and smiles as sweetly and reassuringly as she can to the huddled goodwife and children, though includes Groll in her introduction. "I am called Shiyana. I serve the Shadebough Circle. This is Brother Odo, of the light of Pholtus, Turthain of the Emerald Cloak and Camlin the Runner." The druidess has no idea if these humble folk will have even heard about her sacred grove/ organization, but figures it couldn't hurt.

Specifically to the woman and children she kindly adds, "You have nothing to fear, now."
She indicates her companions with a delicate wave of her hand. "We are here to end your fear and oppression."

Turning back to the head of the hosuehold, Shiyana asks, "Can you tell us anything more? What direction they normally come from? Do they always come at night? What do they come for or want here? Anything you might tell us, Master Groll, would be useful." Shiyana wants to be sure to be able to formulate as much of a plan/strategy as possible.

Again, she is careful to keep any of her building nerves from showing to these poor, obviously frightened, country folk.

Redding Flat -- Groll

"They've come twice now, killing two cows the first time and one cow, two goats, a sheep, and rending our apple tree the second time. They come from over yon way," he indicates with his arm, "Please, please help us."

Five or six ogres? More than enough to pound the elf and all of his companions into the ground without a second thought. Turthain didn't voice his concerns in front of Groll and his family, but the elf knew they'd have to come up with some sort of advantage to win a fight against such odds.
