Defined by: piety, strength which comes from divine favour, chivalry, minor miracles
In D&D: Paladins
Examples: Percival, Galahad (Arthuriana), Britomart (The Faerie Queene), Orlando Furioso a crusader from mediaeval poetry; the Templars and Hospitallers of the real life crusades (watch the movie Kingdom of Heaven with Orlando Bloom if you don't know). David and Jonathan in the Bible behave somewhat like prototypical paladins: their power in battle is from God. And Joan of Arc (as suggested below).
I would also say that the prophets of the Bible are best modeled by the Fourth Edition Invoker, a smiting cleric, but that should just be a sub-class.
