Letting all players design their own custom classes

I don't because neither my group or I am very good at even coming close to a balanced design. We either over load or underload them incomparision to other classes and/or monster. Simple things can make a character far to powerfull.
 

I've been toying with the idea of cutting back to three basic classes: warrior-type, skill-type, and magic-type. Many of the current class abilities would be made feats or some such. Multi-classing would be free to allow for flexibility. A typical ranger then would probably be a mix of warrior-type and skill-type. One of these days I'll flesh this out.

just hypothetically...I've only given it about 2 minutes of thought...

6 classes based of of the Modern class system...feats for magical abilities...

2 levels of feats for magic, one gives you a slower progression (ie. ranger, paladin) and a second gets you full magic user progression...

3 sets of feats, 2 varieties of each...for example:

1st feat charisma based arcane - slow progression
2nd feat charisma based arcane - fast progression

spell tables would have to be thought out for each progression.

just my random thoughts worth...
