That is what I think the spell intends, too, Aggemam. It restores you to the level you were before the energy drain. If you cannot get the spell cast on you before you gain enough XP normally to regain your lost level(s) then you no longer need the spell and it will not have any effect on you.
In most cases, the restoration will bring you back to your former level because you have not had time to gain the XP back normally or because your groups' cleric has the spell prepared or is stored in a magic item. But if you cannot get one and you gain some XP, these will not be added on top of the restoration spell. IOW, you either gain the lost XP and levels normally or through the magic of restoration, but the two methods do not stack. At least they do not stack beyond your former level.
