Level related special ability for multiclass kits

Hi everyone.
One of my players wants to play a bladesinger.
Some of his abilities are related to his level, but what is his level?

I will explain better....
He uses two experiece tables (the fighter and the mage). At some point he will be a fighter of X level and a wizard of (X-1) level.

How do I menage this problem? What is his "level", the one used to calculate his abilities?

Ouch. Somehow I managed never to spot that one, despite playing 2nd for years and 'enjoying' having several Bladesinger PCs make an appearance.

I would recommend using the lower of the two levels at all times - multiclass characters are already very powerful, and Bladesingers even moreso, so probably best to err towards lower-power where possible. But I don't think there's a RAW answer.

I thought I could give the same xp table to both classes, so he would hit 2° level on both classes at 2250xp (like rangers), in the middle between the 2000xp for fighters, and 2500xp for mages. But I have to check at higher levels.

The same problem usually arises with all kits for multiclass characters.

You could save yourself some heartbreak and just ban the bladesinger- or, hell, even the entire Complete Book of Elves!

Failing that, I'd simply go with the lower level. And I would not combine the xp charts; different classes advance at very different rates for very good reasons.

Well, you say that, but actually it's a quirk of 2nd Ed that the Wizard progression speeds up significantly just as the class suddenly starts gaining all its best powers - to the extent that at 60k XP the character is actually a Fighter 6/Wizard 7!

Yes, I have always felt that this is on purpose. Once a magic-user breaks through a certain point, he or she advances fairly quickly through the "good but not gamebreaking" spell levels, then slows down again as he or she moves into the stuff that is really world-changing.

Given that it isn't explicitly stated anywhere in the Elves handbook about what to do, I would suggest doing as others have said - use the lowest level to determine ability gain. Effectively, this ensures that even if the Bladesinger is a Fighter 2 / Mage 1, they are not technically a full-fledged Lv.2 Bladesinger.. they'd be more like between 1 and 2 still. Just my thoughts as well.
