It was interesting to see how damage does scale in 4e.
It scales similarly in 3e-- the big difference in 4e is that through powers, "fighters" are shifted onto the same scaling track as "wizards." (And wizards, by being depowered, shifted closer to the fighters.)
Damage for wizards in 3e scales extremely reliably and predictably-- 1d6 per caster level.

4e damage output is much more predictable and steady for all classes.
