Round 45

The arrow flies by! (Rolled 8)

The falcon fires back! Two flaming spheres are discharged from the bird's wingtips and hit the ground at 65N15E and 65N40E. Everything within a 10 foot radius of these squares bursts into flame!

The dwarf takes only 1 point of damage, so he has 5 hp left. But he is still on fire!

Congratulations, you've just met your first CR 1 monster!

The bird calmly flies to 65N75E, 55 feet high.

Beating the flames out is a full round action, and the dwarf will need to beat a DC 15 reflex save to be successful. Rolling on the ground gives a +2 on the save.

What would you like to do?

Round 46

The flames don't go out! (Rolled 8 + 2 for rolling = 10 Ref save)

The dwarf takes 6 points of damage and fries to a crisp!

The falcon calmly circles around to 60N50E, 55 feet high.

Next up for LG: a zenythri (planetouched) (MM II)

The zenythri goes first in round 47. The flames are still not out in the area, but can be moved through carefully (treat as difficult terrain to sidestep the flames - each square counts two).

Q: In a bare dirt arena, what's to burn besides the dwarf (who's no longer there)? Are you saying that the actual ground was/is on fire? Because the dwarf wouldn't be stupid enough to roll around in the flames themselves.
Q: A CR1 monster has a no-save, no-attack-roll-required, AoE ability?

Ok, I imagined the spheres acting like napalm, but I agree it is a bit much. (What do I know about napalm, anyway?) Take away the terrain restriction, but the dwarf still burns to death.

I'll also treat the spheres as grenade-like missiles, but the falcon only needs to hit AC 5 to put a missile in a desired square, which it can do unless it rolls a natural 1. I just rolled natural 13.

The attack is supernatural, which reminds me - the falcon enters the Hall of Fame! :)

As far as debating CR's, one of the benefits of this battle is that we will all get a better understanding of which monsters have an appropriate CR and which monsters don't. I don't have any intention of changing CR's on the fly unless the source text is unclear as to what CR was intended for the monster. I think the Clubhouse would be the perfect forum to discuss whether the original authors of the monster screwed up royally when they assigned CR.

The zenythri, having seen the destruction and speed of the firefalcon, swiftly analyzes that its best strategy is to remain beyond its missile range. She pulls her lightcrossbow out from her cloak, perapares it for fire, the takes a 5' step out inot the arena (ONOE). She fires the crossbow at the firefalcon, then reloads.

Actually the CR comment was more along the lines of a "please double-check" more than a slam against the critters CR. What source is that beastie from?

Edit: forgot to say where she entered.
