[Libris Mortis] Ghouls as PCs and more

Thanks again Darkness. Yes, I was refering to the +1 ability score per 4 character levels.

I find the rules as written unplayable. There is no clear indication how to generate ability scores using standard arrays or point buy, how to relate to level-prerequisites (such as in the Leadership feat), how to treat racial traits, how to set maximum class skill rank, or how DCs for special abilities are set ("class HD" is not clear in the context).
This is most disappointing. Andy Collins or Bruce Cordell really messed up here, they are professionals and should know better than to leave such loose ends and sloppy terminology.

And Hellhound: I'm already packing up on ILW potions....

* Can a ghoul use a potion or elixir?

I'd say go ahead with potables since (according to LM) ghouls are diet dependent, thus they do have a metabolism of sorts to absorb liquids.

As for the ghouls previous race,a ghoul is a ghoul as the MM and LM state it, else they'd be template creatures like skeletons or zombies (in the 3.5e MM at any rate). You could work the ghoul class into a template class, but your DM might be a bit wary of doubling up on the racial modifiers (LM and SS both have a list of racial traits for the ghoul in additon to the class features and progression).
Then again, this could all be rendered moot by your DM's take on undeath. Does a ghoul's darkvision come from negative energy or from a physiological change? Does your character know from the start that it was an elf? Does it remember being an elf or did learn this later? It's not necessarily that the rules provided are unplayable as written, but that they quickly grow more and more complex.
