Life Without Gaming--What would we do???

First Post
I am a hardcore gamer. I run a weekly D&D game, play a table wargame like Chainmail or Age of Reason weekly, and I usually try get into a decent D&D group.

Gaming takes up a significant portion of my life. My RPG books are in clear site and in easy reach at my desk. My miniatures are stored in a convenient place to sent them into bloody combat at a moments noticed.

I've spent thousands of dollars in my 13 years as a gamer.

And I am certain there's others out there just like me.

Tonight after running my Greyhawk Campaign, my RA comes in slightly drunk and complaining about his girlfriend who he left at the bar. He kinda looked around at my stuff I was still picking up.

And I could see there was a world of difference in what he considered fun and I what I considered fun. I don't think going to bars and getting drunk is fun, he does.

And after this happened I wondered what I'd be doing in my leisure time if I wasn't a gamer. What if my brother never introduced me to D&D when I was ten? What if Gary Gygax never tinkered with rules for fantasy battles and thus creating D&D?

What would us gamers be doing instead of gaming?

What if Gary Gygax never tinkered with rules for fantasy battles and thus creating D&D?

I've asked myself that many times over the years. I truly think that if Gary hadn't written those books, I would have spent my teen years getting arrested and/or worse.

In fact, several of my close friends in high school, who didn't share my passion for gamming, ended up permanently insane (schizophrenic), temporarily insane (LSD overdose), in jail (various drug, weapon, and theft charges), or dead (shot in the head, fatal car accidents, etc. ).

Fortunately for me, I spent most of my free time at home, sifting through books and writing notes, creating worlds and personalities and thinking about all sorts of cool stuff.

Thanks for keeping me out of trouble, Gary! :D

I'd probably have invented RPGs and got filthy rich doing it.

...nah, on a second thought, I'd probably have invented RPGs, contemplated the idea, thought "Sounds interesting, but noone will like it", and promptly went back to school. Then, a couple months later, someone would come out with exactly the same idea and get filthy rich.

I know it because that's exactly what happened with Magic: the Gathering. I would have eaten my brain for that.

I need to show this to the kid in my gym class who has a dad for a pastor. He keeps saying D&D is evil and it's a proven fact that D&D has made people kill eachother and all sortsa BS like that. Games don't kill people, people kill people while playing games!
