I gamed with them. Oh yes, I've LARPed with those guys.
They, like many LARPs in the United States, use a system that mirrors D&D. That's right: they run around with weapons and armor, but
the rule system mirrors D&D--a rule system that tries to model running around with weapons and armor.
The horror, the horror of seeing some twit run up, swinging his "Drizzt"-style two swords like drumming sticks, while yelling "fourdamagefourdamagefourdamagefourdamage" so fast he sounds like a raving idiot. Which, of course, he is.
Compare to the Curious Pastimes larp in england, which has real english accents, a much better game system, real beer in the beer tent, and much better looking... costumes and weapons.
Er, I said weapons.
