For the rare occasions that it matters, does this special ability reduce the item's weight? It sounds like it should.

It does sound that way, doesn't it? I don't know if that would be a balance issue. I don't know a lot of things. I came in here looking for a rod that looked like a lightsaber and got a weapon property instead. But it seems to work.

If we let it reduce the weight of the weapon to the weight of the rod, then wouldn't the sword (regardless of size) be finessable as well?

Hmm... In that case you could argue that your weapon proficiencies wouldn't apply. Better to treat it like a sunblade and assume that in use it weighs and moves like the real thing. It could be lighter when de-activated though.

It's also a lot easier to hide than a regular sword, which can be handy.

That makes sense. When not activated, the rod weighs only 1 pound and weighs and handles as the sword when acitvated. Maybe users should get a +2 bonus on Sleight of Hand checks when attempting to hide them on a person, like with daggers.

As for activating, I guess it'd be a swift action that doesnt' provoke an attack of oppurtunity.

Energy Blade: This metal rod is shaped like a sword hilt. When the rod is activated, a blade springs forth from the base of the hilt, forming a sword. The particular blade is determined at creation. The sword blade is translucent and glows a decorative color, sheding light as a candle. It strikes as the sword used to create it, so an adamantine sword still ignores hardness. The blade can't be sundered. Activating the energy blade is a swift action that does not provoke an attack of opportunity. The rod is composed of the same metal as the blade.
