Limited Wish/Wish to respec a character?

I have a PC that is wanting to change his character when he gets a limited wish or wish spell. He is currently a general wizard that wants to change to a diviner/loremaster.

Any rules on this or precedents?

He wants to retroactively change what levels he took?

Too much IMO. That would take divine intervention, a la blackguard conversion of paladin levels.

That is way to powerful. But I would let him try them mess with him.

The best you could hope for is if he says "I wish to be a loremaster". Then you could say, fine you are now a first level expert.

Good point about the Blackguard precedent and the possible need for divine intervention. As the player of said wizard, I guess I won't know what happens until I try. I seek to fill what I perceive as a gap in our efforts to survive RttToEE and save Greyhawk, and can only hope to make it.

Wow, that's harsh. I would have hoped for some dialogue between my DM and me before I'm smacked down for uttering "I wish I had focused more on Divination studies in my youth". Yikes.

Why do you expect dialogue between you and your gamemaster for a wish spell?

Your character wishes for what he wishes for, and he won't know what he gets until he gets it.

I say that there should always be some diologue. It is the DM's responsibility to shape the world that the PC grew up in, and if he is high enough to have levels in Lormaster, the character himself would have some idea of what magic would and would not do, especially if he is casting the spell himself. A friendly warning between friends would at least be called for.

As a DM, I would say no, but if you have a mind to give a little, I would have him cast with all the restrictions of a Diviner, but give him only some of the benifits up front. Give him the extra spells up to a level equal to his Intelligence modifier, i.e. a +3 int. would give him the bonus 3rd level and lower divination spells, then every new level he gets, he gets the next level of spells, (4th, ect.). Maybe even assign him the 20% x.p. loss for multi classing. This would represent him giving up whole fields of magic, a difficult and painful thing to do, and represent the hardships of learning everything from scratch. As far as Loremaster goes, or any other prestige class for that matter, he should earn those levels from where he is at.

I don't know what it is about the wish spell that immediately turns 90% of DMs into jerks... IMO if you're looking for an excuse to screw characters over, why wait for them to get a wish?

Salutations,

Wow, I have never seen anyone wish anything like this.

I am not fond of the wish spell, but I would be willing to work with the player on the diviner aspect. I would have to veto the PrC.

The Wish spell takes away the DM's "power" - basically, it lets players do what they want.
