Literary (and other) settings wishlist

There have been lots of interesting suggestions, a number of which I wouldn't mind seeing myself.

I'll add two more to the the list, although maybe a little obscure to get an RPG treatment.

The Cycle of Fire - Janny Wurts

The Wars of Light and Shadow - Janny Wurts

She co-wrote the Empire novels with Ray Feist. Her world building, I think, is second to none and some very interesting dynamics that she creates within those worlds.

off the top of my head:

  • Robin Hobb's Farseer trilogies (personally I think Ars Magica would work wonderfully for this)
  • Gregory Keyes's Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone
  • Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Series

Brust's Vlad Taltos books have already been mentioned, ....

Not often enough!!

I am reading the new Jhegalla novel and I am {again} struck by how 'DnD'ish the setting is. A strong history, well defined nations and archtypical characters. It is also one of the few worlds where the high magic world makes sense... in the way that assasinations are an inconvienance to those with access to the right people/power.

I would very much enjoy playing a character in Vlad's world {just not anywhere near him...way too many deaths occur while he is around!}
