Little help with CR/EL

Magic Missile

First Post
Right, just checking I'm doing this right...

Six kobolds, individual CR 1/6. But there are six of them, so I add on +6 to the overall EL (as per the table in d20 modern)? Giving an EL of 6 1/6. Assuming it's a bog standard combat, no special circumstances etc. I leave this figure as it is, then round down to EL 6.

Is this right? EL 6 sounds tremendously high for 6 kobolds.. and the xp reward is about 2.5k... for a party of 4 that takes them about 2/3 the way to level 2 already!

It just seems a little off to me...

Any help appreciated! :-)

EDIT: Didnt noticed you were talking about the EL also. I think the EL would be 1 also. But dont quote me on that.

I thought it would be a CR of 1.

6 (kobolds) * 1/6 (kobold CR) = 1

I dont have the book with me but this is how we do it in D&D and I dont think its changed.

Yeah, that's how I did it in D&D too... 6 lots of 1/6 CR beasties = total CR 1...

But according to d20 modern, if all creatures have the same CR, you add a number based on the amount of creatures (table 7-6 says 2 creatures +2 CR, 3 creatures +3 CR etc.)... which is how I get my end EL of 6.

Still seems really high for 6 kobolds. I'm sure I've got something wrong somewhere, but the rules as I read them keep leading me to EL 6...

Isn't it like ...

You take the EL of the first creature. Double it for the second. And double the EL again for every doubling after that?

So ... 1/6 for one Kobold. 1/3 for 2 Kobolds. 2/3 for 4 Kobolds. 1 1/3 for 8 Kobolds ...

I'm not looking at any books, mind you, this is just that I remember something working like that.

*blinky*

My memory is odd from time to time, and I'm on vacation and don't have my books.

i'd only use that table if the base CR of the creature is 1 or above.

for creatures with a base CR less than 1, i'd still do it the D&D way -- so six CR 1/6 kobolds are EL 1.
