Living Greyhawk: a free adventure?

For several reasons. One is that they remain playable for several years so there's not an incredible amount of turnover.

The second is that they don't actually buy the rights to the modules. Authors voluntarily give them the right to use them for the campaign and the NPCs but the actual modules remain the property of the writers. So publishing them would require negotiations. Some writers might be willing to make them available free of charge. Others might want to publish them elsewhere at some point in the future.

That said, it doesn't cost anything to join the RPGA and order adventures for Living Greyhawk play. So, in that sense, they are free right now.

Why don't they make them ALL free once they've been played?

There's a free mini-adventure for those of you wondering how the LG scenarios are formatted. I just glanced at it, but it looks like it has some nice elements.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! Shawn Merwin is responsible for that little piece 'o fun, but it is a lead-in to the LG Special event at Origins this weekend. Should be a lot of fun!

It doesn't cost anything to join the RPGA? I always thought there was a membership cost. Is this free membership a new development?

Don't know when it became free, but yes, it is free. A fantastic "deal," if you can call it that. After playing D&D for 23 years, I tried my first RPGA event at last year's Gen Con, and it was a lot of fun.

About 2-3 years ago, IIRC.

Cheers!

This doesn't seem to be an adventure, as such, but more like 3 short episodes attached to, what should be, a wider story arc. Will more adventures be added to finish where this left off?

Are all LG adventures short like this? I guess they have to be coz you've only got 4, or so, hours of playing time.

It isn't really an "adventure." It was meant to act as a quick introduction to a Living Greyhawk Special Core module running at Origins. Since the module at Origins was going to be a timed event that a lot of groups weren't going to be able to finish unless they were really efficient, I wanted to give them an introduction they could play at home, rather than having to spend precious time during the convention slot explaining the backstory. Also, the introduction provided players a link between a previous LG Core module "Shedding Scales" and the Origins LG Special.

Regards,

Shawn
