The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, an attempt to build the world's first sustainable fusion reactor and perfect some technologies that are needed to produce a viable fusion power plant. The site for the actual reactor was the subject of a big international competition (that was very politically charged) between Japan and France, and it's being build in southern France. The word also means "the way" in Latin and that's now the official meaning of the name instead of an English language acronym.
