Longarms and shooting at close range

In the D20 modern book in mentions that shooting a long arm in dificult at close range because of the size. I belive it says that fireing into an agacent square provoks a AoO. Is this one square away or two. So a person is shooting there's a five foot space and another person or for those that are in "touching squares".

Adjacend means in the square right next to you, near enough he can hit you with a stick.

And AFAIK you get -4 on your attack or something (firing firearms generally provokes an AoO, but Gunslingers dont, if they use handguns)
