Often my PC's have several weapons, but the longsword is rare to be the prime one.

By far the most common is the greatsword, the war-axe, or the maul. My PC's don't need no stinkin' AC!

I've seen a lot of characters start out with a longsword, (. . .)

I wonder if that might have something to do with it be so predominantly favored in earlier editions of the game and/or as a part of some cultural perception of what should be "the" weapon of choice?

Interestingly, the D&D "longsword" isn't actually a longsword. The "bastard sword" is more like a longsword; the "longsword" is really a Viking sword or an Arming sword.

But everybody probably knew that anyhow.

That really depends on your nomenclature. To me, a bastard sword is more like an arming sword or warsword.

"Longsword" is such an abused term it basically means "cut and thrust sword."

Fighters use greatswords (or other two-handers); clerics use morningstars; thieves use shortswords (or other Weapon Finesseable); wizards use quarterstaves.

I answered 20 percent. This includes tank fighters, clerics of War gods with longsword as favored weapon, multi-class thief/X TWFers, and elven wizards.
