Looking back and looking ahead

Well guys, 2006 is ending soon and looking back, one thing I really wish about this year was that I had spent more time playing games with my friends, especially RPGs. I know I haven't been the most regular player this year, because of family commitments, work commitments and general malaise.

And it hasn't even just been this group (the Conan/Inzeladun group), which I've fallen out of in the past six months or so. I haven't played my D&D game with the work crew since this summer. And Mark's gaming group I have only been able to make once since this summer.

On a personal level, I'd really like to get at least one regular game going again in the new year. I'd really like to know what anyone would be interested in playing on a regular basis in 2007, something we could get a solid core of players committed to and showing up every two weeks or so.

For me, I would be most interested in playing in a super powers (but not necessarily superhero) campaign sort of like the world of the Heroes TV show or the Aberrant game or a medium to high fantasy game whether Conan, Inzeladun or regular D&D. I could run either of those on a regular basis, I think.

So, I'm just wondering what anyone else would be interested in and what we could get going regularly in January.

Well, honestly, I am growing a little tired of board games. Maybe it is just too much of the same thing and I need a change every now and again to RPG. Vince has probably grown to hate it when I say things like, "I might play again in Inzeladun," because I invariably change my mind, but, I might be willing to give it a shot again if we can get a core group together. I feel like maybe I have given it a rest long enough to feel reinvigorated by the prospect.

I am not much into super hero gaming. I would imagine, though, that if I really put my foot forward and committed to something that Bob would come too. Chris, I am sure, would be up for Inzeladun again. We can put it to a vote or something. I just probably won't game unless it is Inzeladun. It's the only place that appeals to me as a believable world. If you guys choose to play something else, I am cool with that too. I can still get beaten at Age of Napoleon with Bob! ;)

I like board games or card games as a diversion, but really RPGs are my true interest. I like the aspect of actually stepping into a role and having an adventure that mentally takes me out of my day-to-day life.

And as I've gotten older, I've gotten less and less interested in a true "superhero" game and more interested in the idea of "what if people had superpowers" much like the Heroes TV show, the Powers, Supreme Power or Authority comic series, or the movie Unbreakable. I just can't really figure out a reason for too many people to put on spandex or leotards and fight crime, if they suddenly found out they had superpowers. It's not rational enough for my aging mind.

But I can see the government wanting to get involved and control them. I can see ordinary people being jealous or fearful. I can see lots of room for intrigue and shadowy dealings.

I think after Superman, everything else has been somewhat of a reinvention of the wheel. I am not sure, but wasn't Superman really sort of a metaphor for America after WWII? I don't know if his creators intended this, but I think this is what he was. He was a symbol of our collective self image. Anyway, it is easy to see why other super heroes don't really foot the bill. I like your ideas, but I probably wouldn't be interested enough to do it.

Anyway, we'll see what comes of this discussion soon enough, I reckon.

I feel the same way. It all seemed to fall apart when I dropped the GMing duties in favor of focusing on my education, my work, my family and other issues. Let's kick it into gear for 2007! I put up a poll to see what people are interested in for this January.

By the way, I can't find my copy of Siddhartha. Did I loan that out to anyone?
