Good comics eh? A few good picks that you should be able to find in stands now ...

Midnight Nation and Rising Stars , both by B5 creator JMS. Midnight Nation is as previously said about a man looking for his soul and Rising Stars is a different take on superheros, with a Higlander/Jet Li's The One twist.

Warren Ellis, my fav author, also has written a lot of good stuff like Transmetropolitan -- which tells the stories of Spider Jerusalem, an hot shot reporter in a messed up cyberpunk-ish american metropolis of the future and his fight against both a corrupt president and the society as a whole. Some really good stuff and IMO the best series in stores right now. --, Planetary -- a story of secret service investigators that are investigating the paranormal and supernatural of a superhero world. A rather different take on the whole superhero mythos -- and Strange Kisses/Stranger Kisses/Strange Killings -- some heavy duty and incredibly gory sci-fi --.

In the fantasy department I can offer you Battle Chasers an Manga-ish story. Not very heavy reading, but quite entertaining. A popcorn flick of comics. The US comic market as a rule is not very good when it comes to fantasy. I have never read Warlands or Steampunk but I'm told that both are silimar to Battle Chasers. For good fantasy go the Manga or european route, although I think that eurocomics are hard to access in the states.

Yeah, and Groo, probably the best US fantasy series evah!!

Those are the first to spring to mind although there are a lot of good comics out there now.

I have a few that I'd recommend.

If you have a deep love for 4-color comics:
  • Astro City (finished series w/ graphic novels)
  • Ultimate Spiderman (best superhero comic I've seen available today)

If you have a twisted sense of humor:
  • Hitman (finished series w/ graphic novels)
  • Preacher (finished series w/ graphic novels)

I have a deep love for Garth Ennis as a writer, which I'm sure says deep and disturbing things about my personality.

Yeah, can't go wrong with Garth Ennis. He is one sick puppy.

He did wonders with the otherwise sterile antihero, The Punisher, wrote the opening story for the Darkness series which got me hooked not only on the Darkness but the whole Top Cow universe, made me crap myself from laughter with the Rifle Brigade and gasp in awe over Just a Pilgrim.

And DICKS, read DICKS, you have to, it's one of the funniest stories I've ever read!! READ IT!! NOW!!!

Image Comics/Top Cow's Warlands series is excellent, though they have an annoying tendency to give you very little read, compared to adverts and self publicity for their other comics... but still it is an enjoyable read, and inspiring artwork wise. their Fathom stories are also great.

And also if it's a D&D type read your after, check out Kenzers D&D comics... they are a good read, well drawn, few annoying changes of direction for characters now and then, but overall a very enjoyable RP inspiring comic read.

Blade of the Immortal is incredible. I've been collecting comics for over 20 years, and IMO, this is the best comic being published today.

Oh I forgot, another good sci-fi/fantasy is Red Star. It about this psuedo russian empire that is crumbling. Battles are heavily influenced by the presence of teck and magic.

Anything in print with Neil Gaimans name on it is gold. As mentioned abover Hellblazer and Preacher are cool.

Not mentioned, Dave Sim's Cerebus started as a conan parody, then moved on to make some very funny stories (High Society), critizise religion (Church and State), and has now moved to a cross section of the complexities of relationships between and among the sexes. The story follows the life of Cerebus the Aardvark and will end, in about another year, at issue #300 with his death. You cant get back issues very easy but the main storylines have been reprinted in big 'Phone Books'. To get a feel i'd suggest starting with High Society and then moving to Church and State, after that theres a few more phone books. I think the current storyline in print is Going Home, where cerebus finally comes full circle with what an ass he's been, all the good things he's blown, and tries to make something decent of his life. Its a monthly B&W with beautifull backgrounds by gerhard.

I'll throw in another plug for Blade of the Immortal . The action is great and most of the series is collected into nine trade-paperbacks (covering 57 issues). Additional trades are released about 3 times a year.

Dark Horse comics also just finished collecting AKIRA into 6 volumes. I was never a fan of the movie because they tried to fit 2000 pages of comics into a two hour film and it didn't work IMHO, but the original work is great.

Another great one for mythology fans is Hellboy. There are five TPBs out there and they are all great.

Let's see... (looking at my collection)

Oh yea, Grendel. Anything Grendel is good, particularly any of the Grendel Tales TPBs.

Another great, but hard to find series, is Oink. It's about a post apocalyptic pig-man. The art is fully painted and i just can't get enough of it. There has only been two story arcs, Heaven's Butcher (available in TPB) and Blood and Circus.

If you wasn't something a little strange, Ashley Wood's Pop Bot is good. There are only two issues so far (although I haven't seen #2).

Have fun, now I want to read some comics.
