Looking for a few good comics.

I can recommend three titles for the DnD fan:

Sojourn, Sojourn and Sojourn.

Yep, that's pretty much it. The first TP is coming out soon. The background story goes like this:

In the world of Quinn, the Five Lands (Deserts of Odubai, Cliff of Ankhara, Frozen Reaches of Skarnhime, Black Grimbor and Middellyn) were almost entirelly conquered by the warlord Mordath some 300 years ago. But out of nowhere a regal-looking archer named Ayden came forth and led the downtrodden peoples of Quinn against the troll armies of Mordath. They vanquished him, Mordath being slayed by an arrow from Ayden's very magical bow. After that, Ayden left the Five lands, but first he split that killing arrow into five fragments, who were scattered through the Five Lands. If Quinn ever needed him again, the joining of the fragments would summon him back.

300 years later, Mordath is risen from the dead (and LOOKS like he did) and led the trolls to a conquest by steel and fire (he now has some magical fire-related powers). His troops burned a village to the ground, killing many, including the husband and daughter of Arwyn, a retired member of the Royal Guard, and master archer. She vowed revenge, and so the story begins...

More good authors...

Brian Micheal Bendis has gone from being a nobody to being one of the biggest names in the comic world in just a couple of years. What makes him so good is his excellent and realistic dialouge and character creation. The people in his stories talk and feel real. Who better then to pen the relaunch of Spider-Man in Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, without a second thought probably the best written Spider-Man story ever (althogh I'm told that JMS's Amazing Spider-Man is pretty good too. I haven't read it myself).

Other good Bendis work include his work on Daredevil, his three crime thrillers for Image Goldfish, Jinx and Torso (Torso being my fav, tells the story of Elliot Ness fighting a serial killer in Cleveland). In a similar feel is Alias, Powers, a story of two cops investigating metahuman crimes, and Sam and Twitch, which takes the Spawn sidekicks into a serial killer investigation. He also wrote the stand-alone story Fortune and Glory, an autobiography of when he tried to make it in Hollywood as a writer.

Other work of Warren Ellis than the ones previously mentioned are Lazarus Churchyard: The Final Cut, his first real comic work that just came out in a TPB, about an immortal junkie in a futuristic cyberpunk world. Then there is Stormwatch, the superhero title he got hired to finish with a bang (which he did) and it's spin-off, The Authority, ubermunchkin fascist superheros rule the world (is now currently being penned by Mark Millar, the writer of Ultimate X-Men, another good title).

If you're looking for fantasy. It's not swords and sorcery, but there is Phil Foglio's "Girl Genius". It's a steam-punkish 30's Science gone horribly wrong sort of world. Great plots, hysterically funny gags. Pretty much anything by him is hysterically funny. In a more pure fanatasy vein. He also did the comic adaptation of the first Myth-Adventure book and managed to make an already funny book almost lethally humerous read. Check out his web site at

I liked the League of Extraordinary Gentleman.
I don't know what happened to it but I liked the premise.
Victorian Englad characters from books as superheros.
Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll/Mr.Hyde, Sherlock Holmes, and a few more I cannot remember.

To hijack the thread for just a moment. Did you know that they are making a League of Extraordinary Gentleman movie, and that Sean Connery has already been cast as Quartermain.

Is it my imagination, or did the birds just all start singing and the clouds disappear from the sky?

Good God. I can't wait!

Oh hell yes, this is good to hear. It's rumored that Robbie Coltraine is up for a role. Nothing specific, but he's a perfect fit for Mycroft Holmes. Get Winona Rider back as Mina, as she's now old enough to pass as a divorced Mrs. Harker. I wonder if Chris Lee would take the role of Moriarity?

Well, I'm obviously prejudiced for certain titles, so let's get those out of the way first, then I'll move on to other companies. :)

Knights of the Dinner Table - 64 pgs, $2.99 - 22 pages of comics starring the gaming group known as the Knights of the Dinner Table, and the rest filled with news, reviews, articles and HackMaster and Kingdoms of Kalamar gaming content. 66 issues and going strong!

Dungeons and Dragons - "In the Shadow of Dragons" - 8 issue mini-series, or "Tempest's Gate" 4 issue miniseries.

EverKnights - fantasy humor - lots of pop culture references

Knights of the Dinner Table Illustrated - New stories of the Untouchable Trio +1 (the characters that the Knights roleplay) - and written by yours truly :)

Travelers - Another great humor fantasy comic. Little known and vastly underappreciated!

Now, on to the others (with a VERY brief synopsis)...

Dork Tower - by Dork Storm - Another funny comic about gamers and gaming.

Hellboy (or the B.P.R.D spinoff) - by Dark Horse - a demon raised by humans fighting occult evil

Ruse - by Crossgen - Sherlock Holmes-type character and lovely partner in a world where magic is real

Red Star - by Image - alternate Russian history with sci-fi equipment and magic

Some others that aren't quite Sci-Fi or Fantasy, strictly speaking, that I like are (in no particular order):

Transmetropolitan
Transformers
Rising Stars
Powers
JSA
Queen and Country
Hellblazer
Hawkman
The Ultimates
Noble Causes
Defiance
Tom Strong
Midnight Nation
Blue Monday
Sin City
Cerebus
Dirty Pair

And finally on to those no longer published....

Preacher
Sandman
Zot!
Concrete
Maison Ikkoku
Animal Man

There are many more, and I won't bother to list trade paperbacks just because there are many of those too...

Look for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen II this summer. In this new miniseries, the Martians attack!!!
