Ok so i'm starting up a new campign with my buddies. Our new DM has asked us what type of character we are each going to play. Pretty much every game we've played i've always been a mage and at this point i want to try something new. So for the only character seleceted is a Halfling Rogue. There are going to be two (maybe three) other guys (thats including me) Im' thinking of going warrior in this game just not sure how to approach it. What has worked for you guys as an effective and ***** warrior, be it Barbarians, Paladins, Fighters, etc etc. We're going to start at level 1 so its (at this point) going to be a low level game.

I've had a fighter with combat reflexes and a spiked chain. If you lacked Str, weapon finesse applies to the chain, as well.

This is the most versatile weapon, imho. Never played a barbarian; I went for fighter cause of the extra feats.

Well, with the 3.5 rules dwarven fighters wielding dwarven waraxes make for some pretty impressive tanks. Are you talking point buy? What are the ground rules? What books are available?

To do it simply core wise:

do weapon focus Dwarven waraxe and power attack.
Skills: who cares, it's a fighter, do what fits the area
Stats- depends on the points. Focus on str and con. Get the best armor you can afford, and concentrate on keeping this up. A good AC will serve you well up through around 10th level.

This may cause this thread to go off topic but what are the real pros and cons of a Str Based Fighter vs Barbarian in a practical DMing sense, not a munckin reason

We're rolling for our scores, *blows on dice* The basic setting is Forgotten realms, no sure where in the realms is going to be. As for books, Pretty much any core DND books, FRs books, stuff like Races of Farun, Complete Warrior etc. I don't think the licenced d20 stuff is going to be used.

I think the spiked chain is pretty neat weapon, with cool opportunities for focusing on Trip-oriented feats. The only problem I ever saw with that was the fact that it seems silly to find many enchanted spiked chains lying around in dead enemies' tombs. Short of expecting the party mage/artificer to create a magic weapon for you, what's a character to do?

Since they're playing in the Realms, he ought to be able to commission a magical spiked chain in any larger city.

Anyway, IMC I've got two dwarf fighters who use axes, and a human fighter who went the weapon finesse route. Low strength, 18 dex, midling con. He seems to be the most deadly of the three, possibly because he's faster. He's been mowing through the bad guys like a hot knife through butter.
